Are you a sweet or sour cocktail person?

I’m a little bit of both. I like my drinks to have the perfect balance. I gave up the overly-sugary concoctions long ago, and if a drink has too much pucker power I feel like my taste buds are shot with the first sip. I prefer a natural sweetness, something that comes from as whole of foods as possible rather than juices or soft drinks with tons of added (artificial) sugars (P.S. More to come on that soon. I have some exciting stuff to share with you all!) I like the taste of the alcohol to come through in just the right way, balanced by the flavors of all of the other components. Nothing too overwhelming, I want to be able to taste every single ingredient in my drink!

Today I’m sharing with you what I consider to be a perfectly balanced cocktail. I hope you all like tequila because we’re talking Pineapple Pummelo Margaritas! I was inspired to make these when I was cruising through the produce section of Whole Foods and saw some lovely pummelos stacked among the fruits and veggies. [In case you were wondering, pummelos are the largest member of the grapefruit family but are sweeter and milder than their well-known cousin. Oh, and they also have a VERY thick skin!]

I have been loving the grapefruit theme lately, especially in cocktails (like these!) I had never been a HUGE fan of straight grapefruit juice because of its pucker power (as mentioned above) but I’ve been fine tuning my “balanced” cocktail technique and have found a way to build in this healthy fruit and its juice while still being able to taste all of the other ingredients.

In this case, because I used a sweeter pummelo, we were already on the right track to balance. We all know the base recipe for a margarita typically involves tequila (duh), Triple Sec, and lime, and we don’t stray far from that with this version. We only use a touch of lime juice, but add in the juice from the pummelo and some fresh pineapple juice to really shake things up (pun intended.)

These yummy Pineapple Pummelo Margaritas are incredibly easy to make (we’re talking 5 minutes!), and I was able to find all of the ingredients at either Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods. Plus, it’s Thursday so you still have a day to go out and get all of the “stuffs” before it’s Pau Hana time.

Personally, I have the day off today so I’m planning on making some of these as soon as it’s socially acceptable to do so. Keep calm and margarita on my friends!
