The Most Refreshing Tropical Sangria

Okay, I just want to start off by saying I am completely aware that this is the second tropical recipe I’ve posted in a row, but I don’t think you’ll blame me once you see what I have in store for you. This refreshing Tropical Sangria was inspired by our trip to Hawaii a couple of weeks ago, and I have to say it is one of the best sangrias I’ve tasted in a loooooong time.

If you think about it, it’s pretty amazing that there aren’t more recipes for Tropical Sangria out there in the world. I saw it on the menu of the pool bar at the condos we stayed at on Oahu and, although I never got a chance to try that one (well, I had the chance, the mai tai I had from them was just enough to discourage me from trying any more of their mixed drinks), I knew I wanted to try and make my own – and undoubtedly better – version as soon as we got home.

If we’re thinking “tropical,” of course we’re going to go with a white wine base. And we’re not talking chardonnay – this white wine needs to be crisp, refreshing, herbaceous and, yes, tropical. I went for a Sauvignon Blanc, but a Pinot Grigio would be great as well.

The next step is to find the most tropical fruit that you can. Pineapple and mango always seem to be a safe bet here on the mainland, but you could also incorporate things like passion fruit, guava or even lychee if you can find them.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I like my sangria to be a little more “high octane” than just your average bottle of wine. And don’t even talk to me about adding any sort of soda water. I think it just waters things down wayyyyyy too much, especially since our Tropical Sangria is going to be served over plenty of ice. This is where the rum comes in! I mean, come on, there’s no liquor that’s quite more tropical than that.

Finally, there are a couple of other not-so-secret ingredients that really seal the deal, and they’re ingredients you’ll find in many of your favorite tiki drinks. We’re talking orange curacao and orgeat. Sure, you could leave them out, but I love the extra dimension they give the drink and they truly do make it taste much more tropical.

One thing I love about this drink (aside from how tasty it is) is that, unlike many other cocktails, this makes a huge batch. In other words, it’s perfect for a party! I recommend mixing it up in a pitcher in advance and getting the sangria nice and chilled – sans ice – until you’re ready to serve. When it comes time for your guests to whet their whistles, just scoop the ice into the individual glasses and pour the sangria over it. Don’t forget to scoop out some of the fruit into each glass! That booze-infused juiciness is the best part.

  • 2 cups cubed mango
  • 1 whole pineapple, cut into wheels and cored
  • 2 750mL bottles white wine (I recommend Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio)
  • 3/4 cup rum
  • 1/2 cup orange curacao
  • 1/2 cup orgeat
  1. Place mango and pineapple in the bottom of a large pitcher. 

  2. Pour all other ingredients into pitcher and stir.

  3. Refrigerate until ready to serve (I recommend at least 30 minutes.)

  4. Pour into individual wine glasses filled with ice to serve. Be sure to scoop in some of the fruit!

Virgin Stone Fruit Sangria

I tell ya, when you’re pregnant, you sure do get some funny cravings. And once you start thinking about something, it’s pretty hard to stop. For example, I’ve been craving doughnuts virtually my entire pregnancy, but have yet to satisfy my craving. I don’t know why I haven’t, maybe because I’m trying to be “healthy”? (Says she who has been baking the likes of cinnamon rolls and Chocolate Cherry Bread basically nonstop.) But perhaps if I DID give in to my craving and just go to Dunkin’ Donuts already, I’d be able to stop thinking about them! Anyone out there  have some insight on this?

But anyhow, one of the other things I’ve been really thinking a lot about in this day of pool parties and beach days is fruity, refreshing sangria. Sure, my Spindrifts and La Croix’s get me through an afternoon lounging in the sun, but sometimes I want something just a little more special (and, let’s be honest, I REALLY miss the wine.)

I got this idea for a virgin sangria when I was looking for some glasses of wine to use as props for one of my photo shoots. Since I’ve been on the wagon, the hubs hasn’t been opening too many bottles of wine because he’d then have to drink the whole bottle himself….womp womp. TBH, I’ve been totally okay with this because (a) I would be really bummed if he opened a bottle I really wanted to taste/enjoy with him and (b) that’s basically every bottle of wine we own.

So, in lieu of opening a bottle of wine which I would subsequently get to enjoy no part of, I turned to my refrigerator and realized that the bottle of cherry juice I had stuck in there would look JUST like red wine. And I could drink it up afterwards! This got me thinking, what else could I make that used cherry juice as a red wine substitute? Some sort of fruity sangria was the first thing that came to mind.

On top of the sangria inspiration, my local Trader Joe’s just happens to be popping with just about every type of stone fruit imaginable, and every time I go I just want to eat it all up. I decided a Virgin Stone Fruit Sangria would be the perfect way to satisfy both my wine and stone fruit cravings and, let me tell ya, I’m so pleased with the result!

I used fresh cherries, apricots and plums in my recipe, but you could really substitute any stone fruit that looks or sounds good to you. That’s half the fun!

And aside from the cherry juice I already mentioned, you’ll also want to have ginger beer and club soda on hand. The ginger beer adds a nice zest to the mix, while the club soda adds even more fizz and dilutes the mixture slightly so it’s not overly sweet.

Mix your stone fruit and your liquids together in a big pitcher, let chill for a bit (you definitely want that fruit to marinate!) and, finally, serve over ice in a big wine glass. Your Virgin Stone Fruit Sangria is served, wine headache not included.

  • 2 cups fresh cherries, pitted and cut in half
  • 3 small apricots, sliced
  • 2 plums, sliced

That’s right, we’re going all out. No holds barred. Because what’s not to celebrate? It’s still warm enough to get outside (the beach is calling my name), but we’re officially into the month of September, which means pumpkin spice and all the other fall flavors are going to be upon us before we know it (oh wait, they already are.)

Call me old-fashioned, call me “shi shi,” but I realized a few weeks ago that I did not have ONE frozen cocktail recipe on my site yet (unless you count these Pineapple Mojito Popsicles, which I must say are quite refreshing for a warm summer’s day!)

I must admit, I’m biased in the fact that I don’t usually find myself ordering frozen cocktails. This bias most likely harkens back to my “I fear all empty calories” days, or perhaps I’ve just more naturally stopped ordering these drinks because I now try to limit the amount of added sugar I enjoy in my drinks (hangover central right there!)

BUT, this blog is all about finding balance, right? About not having any restrictions on what we eat or drink? (In moderation, of course.) Because of this, I felt like it was my civic duty to come up with a delicious frozen cocktail composed of as many natural sugars as possible that wouldn’t leave us laid up in bed with a hangover at any time during this glorious three-day weekend.

Back to that! This recipe is super easy, with just five ingredients and coming together with a quick whir of the blender. We start with cubes of frozen cantaloupe, add chilled white wine and gin, and finish with a touch of simple syrup and fresh lime juice.  Put it all in a blender and your drink is ready in less than five minutes!

Another bonus? This particular recipes makes FOUR cocktails, which means you won’t need to worry about blending the drinks in batches and having a glass full of watery sangria on your hands before everyone is served. Win win!

And did I mention it’s incredibly tasty? The cantaloupe is incredibly refreshing and, even though our Frozen Cantaloupe White Wine Sangria will still melt if you let it sit too long, the fact that we don’t use any ice cubes makes sure it won’t get too diluted and watered down. The Sauvignon Blanc and the lime juice add a nice hint of acidity, with the gin adding lovely aromatics and the simple syrup bringing in just the right amount of sweetness.

Frozen Cantaloupe White Wine Sangria

A refreshing frozen sangria composed of frozen cantaloupe, white wine and gin. The perfect refreshing cocktail for the last of the warm-weather days!


  • 4 cups cubed, frozen cantaloupe
  • 1 ½ cups Sauvignon Blanc (I used Provenance)
  • 3 ounces gin
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 3 ounces simple syrup
  • Lime wheels, for garnish


  1. Combine all ingredients (except lime wheels) in a blender. Place blender on medium-high and blend until well-combined. Serve immediately.

How’s everyone’s holiday prep coming along? I’m really proud of myself for how much I’ve been able to get accomplished these past few days.  I was able to bake some cookies and have (almost) all of my Christmas presents wrapped and ready to go.

If there’s nothing else that this blogging + full-time jobbing have taught me, it’s time management. I’ve found that if I just take a minute to write things down in my calendar and COMMIT, sh** gets done. I’ve always done well with making to-do lists and crossing things off as I go, so I guess this should come as no surprise to me.

So, in the same vein, here’s one more holiday cocktail that I’ve been meaning to cross off my list. Do you ever get gifted that bottle of wine (or someone leaves it at your house after a get-together) that you know isn’t of the greatest quality, but you can’t bring yourself to just throw it out? I have quite a few of these that I either acquired during my time living in Napa or through my current job after we hosted a huge wine company on property. I know I’m never going to drink them on their own, but I always tell myself I need to use it up somehow. Naturally, sangria comes to mind.

I decided it was finally time to make a Holiday Sparkling Sangria a reality a few weekends ago when we were headed over to a friend’s house for a little holiday gathering. I had so much fall/winter fruit on hand (oranges, apples, pomegranate arils, cranberries) that I figured no matter which sub-par bottle of wine I grabbed from my collection, this sangria would turn out alright.

I grabbed a bottle of red wine, and in doing so I also noticed that I had a “throwaway” bottle of sparkling wine hiding in the back of my shelf. I grabbed that too and went on my merry way to the refrigerator, where I pulled out all my winter fruits.

I decided to make this Holiday Sparkling Sangria a red wine sangria, because I figured the cranberries and pomegranate arils would make the drink red anyway. Plus, this allowed me to add some “non-clear” booze to really liven things up.

I threw in the fruits first and then added the liqueurs and red wine. I topped everything off with the sparkling wine. Now, I was making this for a larger crowd, and I have to admit the sparkling wine got a little more lost than I had hoped, so if you want to bring down the portion size, I’d say omit the bubbly. If you need a batch to serve a crowd, definitely include the bubs. It sure doesn’t hurt the recipe!

This Holiday Sparkling Sangria is the PERFECT beverage to enjoy with family and friends on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day (or, if sangria isn’t your jam, you could try this Boilo or this Boozy Spiced Hot Apple Cider.) The sparkling sangria is easy because it serves a crowd, is super fruity and delicious (yay for sneaking in the fruits at this crazy time of year!) and it certainly won’t break the bank.

Holiday Sparkling Sangria

Yield: One large punch bowl or pitcher

A festive sparkling sangria recipe perfect for the holidays!


  • ¼ cup pomegranate arils
  • 1 cup fresh cranberries, cut in half
  • 1 Pink Lady apple, diced
  • Juice of 3 small oranges + 1 small orange, sliced
  • ¼ cup Cognac or Brandy
  • ¼ cup Amaretto
  • 1 – 750mL bottle of red wine (doesn’t have to be fancy!)
  • 1 – 750mL bottle of chilled sparkling wine (again, doesn’t have to be fancy!)


  1. Place all fruit plus fresh orange juice in a very large pitcher or a punch bowl. Add Cognac/Brandy and Amaretto and red wine. Let sit for at least 30 minutes and up to two hours to allow flavors to blend together. Top with sparkling wine and serve!
